On Wednesday, Paramount Pictures released the first trailer for the upcoming Mean Girls movie musical. The basis of this film is the 2017 Broadway musical adaptation of the similarly named 2004 film.

The plot of the film revolves around Cady Heron (Angourie Rice), a new student who is welcomed into the group known as “The Plastics,” which is comprised of Regina George (Reneé Rapp), the leader of “The Plastics,” and the other two members, Karen Shetty (Avantika) and Gretchen Wieners (Bebe Wood).

Heron ends up angering George when she falls in love with her ex-boyfriend, Aaron Samuels (Christopher Briney). Now, Heron needs to dethrone George with the help of her friends, Janis ‘Imi’ike (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damian Hubbard (Jaquel Spivey) while also learning to be herself and dealing with high school.

Tina Fey, the writer and producer of the original film and its musical, plays Ms. Norbury in the film. She is also the movie musical’s screenwriter and producer.

“It felt like we could kind of have the best of both worlds,” Fey told Entertainment Tonight. “We could have this great music, while still being able to live with our characters in a closeup – to be able to have new jokes and new moments that are surprising to people.”

“The main thing that was important to me this time, in doing it for the screen, was to find ways for it to be new and surprising to people,” Fey added. “And I think the casting lends to that tremendously. I think these actors are incredibly perfect in their roles in a very modern take on these parts. Bringing together casts of actors is one of my favorite parts of the process, whether it’s in film, television, stage. I love getting a chance to be a part of it, and I’m so thrilled about this cast that has come together.”

Mean Girls is set for release on January 12, 2024.
