Daniel Craig Confirms ‘James Bond’ Role On ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’
Daniel Craig was a guest star on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and discussed his future plans to play the iconic James Bond.
DANIEL CRAIG CONFIRMS JAMES BOND ROLE
Asked point-blank by the host if he would reprise the role, Craig said yes. “I’ve been doing interviews all day and people have been asking me, and I think I’ve been rather coy, but I king of felt like if I was gonna speak the truth I should speak the truth to you,” he joked.
“We could use some good news here. Daniel Craig, will you return as James Bond?” Colbert asked.
“Yes,” he said to much applause from the crowd. “I couldn’t be happier.”
Craig admits that he has known about his role for a few months now, and says he really did want to return as the spy. “I always wanted to, I needed a break…” Craig said, before Colbert hilariously interrupted with, “you didn’t always want to! You said in an interview, after you finished Spectre, Mr. I-Always-Wanted-To, ‘I’d rather slash my wrists than play James Bond again.'”
“There’s no point in making excuses about it, but it was two days after I finished shooting the last movie, I went straight to an interview and someone said, ‘Would you do another one?’ and I went ‘No!’ And instead of saying something with style and grace, I gave a really stupid answer.”
Switching gears from 007, Colbert and Craig talked about the host’s crush on Craig’s wife, Rachel Weisz. “I don’t see it as a problem, she has a little crush on you, so that’s ok,” Craig said. And a flustered Colbert joked that he hopes they are being adult about this and not European about it.
Then the pair talks about Craig’s new movie, Logan Lucky. The actor looked embarrassed when they played a clip where he had to speak with an Appalachian accent, but Colbert assured him he did a good job. When asked how Craig got his role as an unnamed Stormtrooper in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the actor jokes that, “I slept with J.J. Abrams,” to which Colbert jokes back, “Well I didn’t get a part in Star Wars!”
At the end, Colbert asks if we should expect to see any more Craig James Bond films after this next one, and Craig says he thinks not. “I think this is it. I just want to go out on a high note, and I can’t wait,” he said.
