Amanda Bynes Speaks Out After Petitioning To End Conservatorship

Amanda Bynes has stepped back into the public limelight after filing to end her conservatorship which was established in 2013. The actress uploaded a short video to a new Instagram account where she thanked her fans for their support and said, “my court date is in two weeks,” regarding the request.

Bynes rose to fame on Nickelodeon and later had roles in successful 2000s comedies like She’s The Man and Big Fat Liar. She stepped away from acting indefinitely in 2010 as she began struggling more with substance abuse issues in the public eye. Bynes was placed in the legal arrangement in 2013 after she was hospitalized for a mental health checkup following several arrests.

Her parents cited Bynes’ addiction issues and that she had become “extremely paranoid” as the primary reasons for requesting the conservatorship.

Since the legal arrangement was put in place, her mother Lynn has been her conservator in control of her life and finances. Through an attorney, Lynn supported the decision and said she, “looks forward to seeing the next chapter in Amanda’s life as her mother, not her conservator.”

This isn’t the first time Bynes has addressed the conservatorship publicly. In 2014, she made claims of abuse by her parents that she later recanted, and also spoke on social media about the cost of her treatment in a video from early 2020.

“I have been going to a treatment center that charges $5,200 a month. There’s no reason why I shouldn’t go to a therapist that takes my insurance for $5,000 less a month. This is why I’ve asked to see the judge next week regarding this conservatorship issue,” Bynes said.

Bynes’ comments sparked some responses of support, but nothing close to the tidal wave of attention that Britney Spears’ conservatorship case received.
