Alex Jones Files For Bankruptcy Claiming Billions In Debt After Judgements For Spreading Sandy Hook Lies

Conservative radio host Alex Jones filed for personal bankruptcy on Friday following a court order to pay over $1 billion to Sandy Hook victims’ families after he spread lies about the massacre on his show.

“Like every other cowardly move Alex Jones has made, this bankruptcy will not work,” attorney Christopher Mattei, who is representing one of the Sandy Hook families, said in a statement. “The bankruptcy system does not protect anyone who engages in intentional and egregious attacks on others, as Mr. Jones did. The American judicial system will hold Alex Jones accountable, and we will never stop working to enforce the jury’s verdict.”

Jones filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and court documents indicate that he is worth between $1 million and $10 million, but has debts ranging between $1 billion and $10 billion. This comes after he said on his show that he would utilize bankruptcy filings to decrease bonds and payments and pay a lower penalty.

Families of victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that left 20 first-graders and six educators dead sued Jones for defamation after he called the massacre a “hoax” to promote gun control on his show, Infowars. He also said the families and first responders were “crisis actors.” The families claim they have been subject to harassment from Jones’ supporters. The conspiracy theorist has since walked back his statements and said he does believe the shooting actually happened.

A Connecticut judge ordered Jones to pay $965 million to eight families and an FBI agent for the suffering they underwent because of his false claims. The bill increased further after he was also ordered to pay $473 million in punitive damages.
