Alec Baldwin has made his first public statement since the fatal shooting that occurred on the set of his new film, Rust, on Thursday.
The incident happened at Bonanza Creek Ranch, in Santa Fe County, during the middle of a scene. Baldwin shot a prop firearm that fatally shot the film’s director of photography, Halyna Hutchins, and injured director Joel Souza.
Hutchins was flown to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, where she was pronounced dead. Souza was taken to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe where he is being treated.

“It appears that the scene being filmed involved the use of a prop firearm when it was discharged,” a statement from authorities read. “Detectives are investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged.”
Baldwin broke his silence on the matter on Friday afternoon. “There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Haylna Hutchins, a wife, a mother, and deeply admired college of ours. I’m fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Helena.”
In a statement, Rust Movie productions said, “Production has been halted for the time being” and that “the safety and of our cast and crew remains our top priority.”
Hutchins was a Los Angeles-based cinematographer from Ukraine. She had earned her degree in international journalism from Kyiv National University in Ukraine and worked in investigative journalism in Europe.
She graduated from the American Film Institute Conservatory in 2015 and was named one of the American Cinematographer’s Rising Stars in 2019.
Hutchins was director of photography for the films, Archenemy, Blindfire, and Darlin’.
They emphasized, “There won’t be another deal. There may be one-offs, but that’s it.”
Seibert speculated, “If struggle without context is baffling, heaven without struggle isn’t very interesting.”
The shooter was identified to be John R. Lyons, 24, of Westchester, Illinois.
