Alanis Morissette Skips Olivia Rodrigo Duet For Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Due To ‘Exploitation & Psychological Violence’

Alanis Morissette was scheduled to perform with Olivia Rodrigo in a tribute performance to Carly Simon at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony but later pulled out. She has since issued a statement to counter “mis-informed rumblings” about her choice, saying the Hall of Fame, and the music industry in general, of fostering an “environment that reduces women.”

Morisette wrote a lengthy Instagram story post about the matter, and first clarified “I adore Carly Simon and Olivia Rodrigo and Dolly Parton and Janet Jackson … and all the amazing artists who were there.”

She then spoke frankly about the sexism she has gone through in her lengthy career.

The singer wrote a wide-ranging list of issues with her industry including, “condescension and disrespectfulness, reduction, dismissiveness, contract-breaching, unsupportiveness, exploitation and psychological violence (and more).”

As frankly and honestly as she’s speaking about it now, Morisette was clear that she didn’t always have that luxury as she was building her career.

“I tolerated it because nothing would stop me from connecting with those whom I cared about and resonated with … I sucked it up on more occasions than I can count in order to do so,” Morisette wrote.

She concluded that there was “no need for me to spend time in an environment that reduces women.”

While she didn’t name other award shows or live events specifically, she did say, “I have had countless incredible experiences with production teams with all genders throughout my life. So many, and so fun.”

“I’ll continue to show up in these environments with bells on,” Morissette said, so don’t worry she isn’t going into a recluse phase.

Morissette released her 10th studio album, The Storm Before The Calm in June, which was co-written and co-produced by the electronic music artist Dave Harrington.
