In November 2022, singer Aaron Carter, 34, was found dead in a bathtub in his Lancaster, California house. An autopsy was performed, but the cause of death was not yet released until a toxicology report could be done.

On April 18, 2023, his death was ruled accidental by the Los Angeles Country Medical Examiner-Coroner. Found within Carter’s system was difluoroethane, a chemical found in aerosol sprays, and alprazolam, a generic version of the medication Xanax.

According to the report, the combination of substances caused Carter to drown in the bathtub.

Carter’s ex-fiancée, Melanie Martin, found the cause of death questionable. “[This is] not closure for me,” she told TMZ. “He was wearing a t-shirt and necklace in the bathtub which doesn’t make sense. Why would he be in a bathtub with clothes on? I don’t understand the chain of events.”

Carter’s mother, Jane Carter, also finds the ruling dubious. In March, she posted photos of his death scene on her Facebook, writing that his death was “never investigated as a possible crime because of his addiction past.”

Carter is survived by Martin and their son, Prince, whom the couple welcomed in November 2021.
