Martha Stewart rejoiced in falsely claiming Andrea Peyser, a New York Post columnist who covered her 2004 trial, was dead in her Netflix documentary, Martha.
Peyser is now speaking out about Stewart’s remarks.
The journalist, who started working for New York Post in 1989, used her latest column for the newspaper to declare that she was alive and well.
“New York Post lady was there, just looking so smug. She had written horrible things during the entire trial. But she’s dead now, thank goodness,” Stewart said in the documentary.
Peyser, who responded to Stewart by stating, “I’m alive, bitch!” in the newspaper, then doubled down on her disapproval of the lifestyle mogul.
“It’s been 20 years since Martha Stewart traded her Manolo stilettos for ballet flats, her 1,000-thread-count Egyptian cotton bedsheets for a lumpy, polyester blend-covered bunk bed – the bottom half, she moaned – as she became the most fabulous and furious inmate ever to grace Club Fed,” Peyser wrote. “Two decades later, she’s still fantasizing about (plotting?) my grisly demise.”
Stewart was convicted for lying to the FBI during an insider-trading investigation in 2004.
While Stewart only recalled seeing “New York Post lady” in the courtroom when the verdict was announced, Peyser confirmed in her latest story that she wrote “weeks of post columns” during that time.
“News of my passing came as a shock,” said Peyser of her uncredited appearance in the doc. “But rather than feeling angry or worried that Martha has offed me or to seek an emergency order of protection, I am overwhelmingly sad in the face of Martha’s bitterness.”
It remains unclear as to why Stewart believed Peyser was dead.
The Netflix documentary takes viewers through Stewart’s life, including her five-month stay at Alderson Federal Prison Camp following the trial.
Following the premiere of Martha on Oct. 30, Martha criticized the use of her trial in the film, saying, “It was not that important. The trial and the actual incarceration was less than two years out of an 83-year life.”
Peyser isn’t the only one objecting to the doc. Stewart’s ex-husband called the mogul “abusive” in a Facebook post after the series was released.
The incident even earned a mention in Charlie XCX‘s monologue on Saturday Night Live.
Martha is currently streaming on Netflix.
