New York magazine’s Washington correspondent, Olivia Nuzzi, was placed on leave on Thursday for reasons the magazine described as a “violation of our readers’ trust.”
Nuzzi was communicating with the previous reporting subject, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., when their correspondence turned “personal.”
In a Thursday night statement, Nuzzi acknowledged the relationship: “Earlier this year, the nature of some communication between myself and a former reporting subject turned personal. I did not directly report on the subject or use them as a source during that time. The relationship was never physical but should have been disclosed to prevent the appearance of a conflict.”
Nuzzi continued, “I deeply regret not doing so immediately and apologize to those I’ve disappointed, especially my colleagues in New York.”
New York said in a statement, “Had the magazine been aware of this relationship, she would not have continued to cover the presidential campaign.” The magazine promised to have reviewed Nuzzi’s work during the 2024 campaign trail and reported no signs of bias or inaccuracies.
Although the magazine did not specify the subject of Nuzzi’s relationship, media reporter Oliver Darcy’s Status newsletter identified Kennedy as the individual. According to the report, the romantic relationship between the two started after Nuzzi wrote a profile on him in November 2023.
While she penned the article, Nuzzi purportedly visited Kennedy’s home in California, and the two went hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains.
A representative for Kennedy denied the story after its publication and stated, “Mr. Kennedy only met Olivia Nuzzi once in his life for an interview she requested, which yielded a hit piece.”
Kennedy has been married to his third wife, actress Cheryl Hines, since 2014.
Kennedy was also in the news this week when he revealed that he was under investigation for beheading a whale 20 years ago.
