Star War's Rogue One
The second trailer for the much anticipated new film in the beloved Star Wars franchise aired during the Rio Olympics last Thursday.
Under the direction of Disney, the Star Wars franchise is having many new films added to the oeuvre in the coming years, with stand alone films occurring between the episodic films. Next will be Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is set to hit theaters Dec. 16 of this year. The film is directed by Gareth Edwards.
The second trailer for the film begins with Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker) who has just returned from the Clone Wars declaring that “the world has come undone” and that “imperial flags reign across the galaxy.” The film will follow the start of the Rebel Alliance to destroy the Empire, led by none other than Darth Vader – who chillingly appears at the very end of the trailer with his characteristic heavy breathing. We are also introduced to our new heroes Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) and Cassian Andor (Diego Luna).
While a film outside the main episodic structure of the franchise has never been attempted, this trailer had garnered 34.2 million views as of Monday morning and 1 million per hour for the first 24 hours after its release. Suffice it to say Rogue One is one of the most anticipated films of 2016.
Production has started on both Star Wars: Episode XIII and Star Wars: Episode IX, with expected release dates set for Dec. 15, 2017 and 2019, respectively. Another film in the franchise about Han Solo is expected to be released May 25, 2018.
