American Media Inc.’s new podcast Fatal Voyage: The Mysterious Death of Natalie Wood premiered on iTunes on July 20, 2018 — what would have been Natalie Wood‘s 80th birthday. The 12-part audio documentary series promises to “break new ground” on one of Hollywood’s most mysterious deaths. The podcast summary states, “investigative journalist and host Dylan Howard and his team of investigators will attempt to crack open the case that has eluded authorities for nearly four decades.” The podcast follows an announcement in February of 2018 from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department that Robert Wagner — who was on the yacht the night Wood died — is now considered a person of interest in the case. The case, initially closed in the 1981, was reopened in 2011.
50 CELEBRITIES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW
In 2012, Wood’s autopsy was amended from “accidental drowning” to “drowning and other undetermined factors.” In the first episode of Fatal Voyage, Detective Ralph Hernandez said that the bruises found on Wood’s corpse indicate that she was the victim of an assault. Hernandez also said that the new evidence makes Wood’s death suspicious and indicates “the possibility of foul play.”
In February, Wood’s sister Lana Wood gave an interview to 48 Hours where she reiterated her sister’s famous fear of “dark water” and insisted that she would not have sailed out on a dinghy alone, as was previously suggested by Wagner. She called for Wagner to speak to the police again about the incident. On Fatal Voyage, Wood told Howard that she believes her sister and Wagner had an altercation on the yacht. “I think it escalated to a point where she was either struck or pushed,” she said. “I don’t believe that it was planned. I don’t believe in any of those bizarre stories, but I do know she would not have ended up somewhere where she would completely never, ever go in a million years or certainly not go out not dressed. There’s just too much that doesn’t add up to who Natalie is.”

On Fatal Voyage, audiences will not only get to hear interviews with law enforcement and Natalie Wood’s family members, but the podcast will feature details from Wood herself. According to Rolling Stone, the podcast will include previously unreleased interviews with Wood and excerpts from her unpublished memoir.
