The widow of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, recovered alphabet flashcard drawings made by her husband, and is sharing them ahead of the publication of his long-lost manuscript What Pet Should I Get?.
Audrey Geisel, and Mr. Geisel’s longtime assistant, Claudia Prescott, found the flashcards in the same box in which they found the manuscript for What Pet Should I Get?, reports The New York Times. Like the book, the flashcards had never been published. The flashcards, completed in Geisel’s recognizable style, feature letters of the alphabet with names assigned to characters he had drawn.
As for What Pet Should I Get?, it follows a brother and sister who are enthusiastically on the hunt for a new pet. But once they arrive at the pet store, they become overwhelmed by the choices before them.
Audrey Geisel said in a statement when announcing What Pet Should I Get? earlier this year that her husband had been constantly creating new material.
“While undeniably special, it is not surprising to me that we found this because Ted always worked on multiple projects and started new things all the time,” she said. “He was constantly writing and drawing and coming up with ideas for new stories.”
What Pet Should I Get? will be published July 28.
