On Tuesday, Spike TV shared the newest trailer for their upcoming documentary, I Am Heath Ledger, a film that will look at the life of the title actor, his rise to fame and his untimely death.
Stocked with never-before-seen home footage, of which Heath Ledger was apparently notorious for taking, the documentary is set to explore Ledger’s most intimate moments among his friends and family, and alone.
The documentary will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on April 23, have a limited theatrical release beginning on May 3, and then will air on Spike TV on May 17.
Directed by Derik Murray, who has also directed the documentaries I Am Chris Farley, I Am JKF Jr., and I Am Bruce Lee, the new documentary will feature commentary from director Ang Lee, who worked with Ledger on Brokeback Mountain, Naomi Watts and Emile Hirsch.
Ledger died from complications of an accidental drug overdose on January 22, 2008. During his celebrated career, he stared in films such as, the aforementioned Brokeback Mountain, The Dark Knight, A Knight’s Tale, and 10 Things I Hate About You. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for Brokeback Mountain, and posthumously won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portray of the Joker in The Dark Knight.
