Nevada pot dispensaries licensed to sell recreational marijuana are running out days after recreational use was legalized.
Tourists and locals alike have been lining up in front of Nevada’s dispensaries to purchase marijuana since its legalization went into effect July 1. Sales are already estimated to have reached $3 million.
“The line is out the door and the line just doesn’t stop. People are there when we open [at 10 a.m.] and they’re there when we close [at midnight],” one owner of a dispensary said.
In Nevada, there aren’t enough suppliers licensed to transport recreational marijuana to meet the demand of the dispensaries.
On Friday, taxation officials announced that Gov. Brian Sandoval had endorsed the department’s “statement of emergency,” allowing state officials to consider adopting an emergency marijuana regulation that could alleviate the shortage.
“Unless the issue with distributor licensing is resolved quickly, the inability to deliver product to retail stores will result in many of these people losing their jobs and will bring this nascent market to a grinding halt,” Stephanie Klapstein, a spokeswoman from the state tax department, said. “A halt in this market will lead to a hole in the state’s school budget.”
