On May 3, 2007, a three-year-old girl named Madeleine McCann was abducted from her bedroom apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, while her parents were away dining at a restaurant. Eleven years later that girl is still missing.
Since McCann’s disappearance, multiple theories and documentaries have cropped up surrounding the circumstances that lead to the girl’s abduction, and what ultimately happened to McCann.
Netflix’s new series, The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann, is an eight-part documentary that makes the case that McCann was abducted by traffickers. Yet, this series has already cause controversy.
The parents of McCann, Kate and Gerry, say this program could potential hinder the investigation.
“We did not see and still do not see how this program will help the search for Madeleine and, particularly given there is an active police investigation, could potentially hinder it,” wrote Kate and Gerry. “Consequently, our views and preferences are not reflected in the program.”
Kate and Gerry McCann, who were once thought to be suspects in the case by the Portuguese police, and harshly scrutinized by the media, aren’t part of the series and don’t provide an interview.

“There is still hope that we can find Madeleine,” Kate told the BBC in 2017. “It’s devastating and we really threw ourselves into trying to do everything we could to help find her. It looks like that hasn’t worked yet. But you know we are still looking forward, we still hope.”
Netflix’s The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann debuts on March 15.
