Netflix Releases First Trailer For Barack Obama Biopic ‘Barry’

Netflix’s latest original film takes a look at the childhood of President Barack Obama. On Monday, the movie got its first trailer.

As his last days in the White House come to a close, Obama’s legacy remains in question. In honor of the 55-year-old president, the streaming service giant Netflix has finally released the full-length trailer for its biopic titled Barry, directed by Vikram Gandhi (HBO’s Vice).

The movie examines the pivotal year in Obama’s life when he first arrived in New York City during the fall of 1981 to begin his junior year at Columbia University. It also includes his viewpoints on race, government and what it means to be an American.

The Australian actor Devon Terrell is playing as the 44th President, having a complex relationship with his mother, Ann Dunham, played by Ashley Judd, as well as with his white girlfriend at Columbia, Charlotte, played by Anya Taylor-Joy.

The project also stars Jenna Elfman, Avi NashLinus Roache, Jason Mitchell and Ellar Coltrane.

Back in September, Terrell, who is also bi-racial, said that he prepared himself for the role by spending months learning to write with his left hand, and also working with a speech coach to get Obama’s cadence and intonations right.

This is the second film this year about America’s first black President. In August, the independent film Southside With You detailed the love story between the President and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Barry, which already premiered to critical praise at the 2016 Toronto Film Festival, will hit Netflix on Dec. 16.
