Many movies have been made about the infamous Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar‘s life, such as the recent Escobar: Paradise Lost by Andrea Di Stefano. Netflix will soon get into the ring with its own series, Narcos. It is directed by Chris Brancato, who wrote episodes of Beverly Hills, 90120 and X-Files.
The series will tell the story of the rise to power of Escobar, played by Brazilian actor Wagner Moura. The series will take place during the late ’70s and ’80s in Colombia, during the height of the country’s drug war.
Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents will be played by Boyd Holbrook (Gone Girl) and Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones). The first season of ten episodes will debut on Aug. 28 on the streaming channel.
Another film about the so-called ‘King of Cocaine’ will be shot later this year. Adapted from a Virginia Vallejo‘s book, Loving Pablo, Hating Escobar will be directed by Spanish director Fernando León de Aranoa and will star actors Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz. Produced by EuropaCorp, the movie is expected to come out next year.
