Dakota Johnson may be the daughter of Hollywood royalty, but the Madame Web actress recently revealed that even with famous parents, financial struggles were still challenging for her during her early career.

In a candid interview, Johnson, 34, reflected on a particularly difficult stretch of time when she wasn’t landing roles and was forced to ask her parents—actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith—for help. “There were moments when I didn’t have any money and had to ask my parents for rent,” she admitted. “It was embarrassing.”

Despite being born into a Hollywood family, Johnson insisted that her path wasn’t paved with opportunities. After her breakout in Fifty Shades of Grey, she explained that she faced pressure to maintain success, but that work wasn’t always consistent. “People assume because of my background that I had everything handed to me,” she said. “But I had to fight to be taken seriously.”

Johnson also opened up about the emotional toll that financial instability took on her self-esteem, saying she felt “ashamed” when needing to rely on her family. “It was hard to separate my identity from my family name,” she said. “There was a lot of pressure to prove myself.”

In 2021, Don Johnson revealed that he had cut Dakota off after high school when she refused to go to college in favor of pursuing an acting career.

Dakota has been dating Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin for over seven years, so presumably her cash-strapped days are behind her.
