Nelson Mandela’s Health Improves, Remains Hospitalized

Nelson Mandela, the former South African president and anti-apartheid leader, has shown improvements in his health since being hospitalized with a serious lung infection roughly a week ago, reported BBC News.

Current South African president Jacob Zuma said on Thursday that Mandela’s “health continues to improve but his condition remains serious,” and went on to ask the people of South Africa to keep the 94-year-old South African hero in their prayers.

It has been six days since Mandela was admitted to the Pretoria hospital for his recurrent lung infection – the third time the issue has led to his hospitalization this year. In April, he was hospitalized for pneumonia, and in December he spent 18 days undergoing treatment for his lung ailments and for gallstones.

Mandela’s wife Graca Machal, a Mozambican politician and humanitarian, delayed plans to travel to London to stay by his side. His daughter, Zenani, the South African ambassador to Argentina, flew home to be with him during his prolonged illness as well.

Mandela served as the first black president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, before retiring and continuing his humanitarian work. Among his over 250 awards, he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, the US Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Soviet Order of Lenin.
