Naya Rivera talks frankly about her decision to have an abortion during Glee‘s early days so that she could continue to focus on her career in her new memoir, Sorry Not Sorry.
Rivera played cheerleader Santana Lopez on Fox’s erstwhile musical dramedy series Glee, which was a hit for the network from 2009-2015. In late 2010, Rivera realized that she was pregnant. At the time, Rivera had just recently broken up with her current husband Ryan Dorsey. She had opted not to tell Dorsey – from whom she had split to throw herself into her rising acting career – about the pregnancy. On her one day off from Glee, Rivera went and got an abortion, according to People magazine, who has received excerpts from Sorry Not Sorry.
In 2014, Rivera and Dorsey reunited and were married soon thereafter. They now have an 11-month-old son, Josey.
“It was very scary to open up about everything,” Rivera told People. “It’s not something a lot of people talk about, but I think they should. I know some people might read it and say, ‘What the hell?’ But I hope someone out there gets something out of it.”
“I hope Josey will read it one day,” Rivera adds of her memoir. “I hope it gives him a better perspective on the issues women face.”
Sorry Not Sorry is on sale Sept. 13.
