An explosion at a ConAgra plant in Florida has caused a shortage in nitrous oxide, which propels whipped cream from its aerosol cans, causing a national shortage in the prepared whipped treat.
If you thought 2016 couldn’t get any worse, think again. Without the nitrous oxide available to create the cans, all whipped toppings dispensed via aerosol can cannot be made. And just in time for the holidays, too.
“We should have our full supply up and running by February,” said a ConAgra spokesperson. “Stock up early,” is their temporary advice. ConAgra is the company behind the Reddi-wip brand. Some coffee shops and other places have tweeted about the crisis, informing customers that certain drinks and products will be sold sans cream for the time being.
Rest easy though, one can always make their own whipped cream with an easy recipe, like this one thoughtfully provided by the Today show:
Ingredients:
1-quart Mason jar, chilled
1/2 cup chilled heavy cream
2 tablespoons powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Directions:
Add all the ingredients to the jar. Close the jar and shake until thickened, anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes.
