Nate Burleson, Detroit Lions Wide Receiver, Breaks Arm In Accident

Nate Burleson, who plays wide receiver for the Detroit Lions, was in a single-car highway accident early Tuesday morning that resulted in the NFL standout breaking his arm.

Burleson was driving his black 2009 GMC Yukon on Interstate 696 in Farmington Hills, Mich. at about 2:30 a.m. He was on his way home from picking up a couple of boxes of pizza when one of the boxes began to slip. When Burleson reached over to keep it on the seat of his car, he overcorrected his wheel and wound up slamming into the median, reported ESPN.

When police arrived at the scene, Burleson informed them that he was experiencing pain in his arm. After determining that the NFL player showed no signs of drug or alcohol impairment, they had him sent to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, according to Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw.

After he was checked out by doctors, it was determined that Burleson broke his arm in two places. On Wednesday, he will undergo surgery that will be performed by the same surgeon who repaired the broken leg he suffered in the 2012 season in the Lions 13-7 loss to the Chicago Bears.

Burleson, who currently leads the Detroit squad with 19 receptions after three weeks of play, will not be placed on injury reserve, according to head coach Jim Schwartz. Schwartz expects that the wide receiver will be back on the field before the season is up. In the meantime, QB Matthew Stafford will have to look to second round, 2012 draft pick Ryan Broyles to become a new top target.
