Natalie Portman wore a unique floral mini at the 4th annual festival kick-off fundraising event at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival Wednesday.
Portman donned a lavender Dior Fall 2015 Couture dress to the soiree. The interesting number featured bell sleeves and metal ring chainmail-like detailing around the bodice.
After posing on the event’s red carpet, Portman spoke to reporters about whether or not Hollywood has become more welcoming of women – particularly when it comes to producing and directing films.
“Well, I don’t know that I’ve seen them change but I do feel that there’s a lot of conversation right now about female directors, and why there aren’t more of them,” Portman told the Toronto Star. “I think the conversation is pushing studios to hire more women and also for women to start getting more inspiration and support . . . which is exciting.”
Portman added, “It hasn’t quite changed yet but the conversation is I think a big, important step.”
Portman is at the Toronto International Film Festival with her directorial debut, A Tale of Love and Darkness, based on Amos Oz‘s memoir of the same name. The film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, focuses on Oz’s burgeoning writing career and his relationship with his mother, who Portman portrays in the film.
In a interview earlier this year, Portman revealed that while the story within A Tale of Love and Darkness intrigued her, it was Oz’s use of language that inspired her to adapt it to film.
“The language was really what [drew me], [Oz’s] obsession with words and the way words are connected in Hebrew, which has this incredible poetry and magic,” Portman told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s obviously almost impossible to translate, but there’s just incredible beauty to that. [Jews are] a people built of words, people built of books, and it’s quite beautiful to see that, which is a strange thing to start for a movie.”
A Tale of Love and Darkness is still looking to land a U.S. distributer.
