Narcan Used Twice To Revive Ex-NBA Player Delonte West During Arrest For Drug Possession, Later Released On Bond

Former NBA guard Delonte West was arrested and jailed early Thursday morning in Fairfax County, Virginia, on misdemeanor charges of violating conditions of his release and resisting arrest, authorities said.

According to the county sheriff’s office, the 40-year-old West was released on a $2,000 bond around 5:30 p.m. after being booked into the Fairfax County Detention Center.

Police spotted West around 1 a.m. in Groveton and attempted to serve a warrant when a pursuit ensued, Fairfax County police said in a statement. Officers temporarily lost sight of West during the chase before finding him unresponsive.

Narcan, used to treat narcotic overdoses, was initially administered without the desired effect, police said. West was taken to a local hospital, where a second dose of Narcan worked, and he regained responsiveness.

West, who publicly discussed his bipolar disorder diagnosis during his NBA career, has dealt with substance abuse issues in recent years.

He is due in court on June 25 on drug possession and violating pretrial conditions charges. Another hearing is scheduled for July 11 for the new charges of resisting arrest and obstruction of justice.

West averaged 9.7 points and 3.6 assists over eight NBA seasons with the Boston Celtics, Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers and Dallas Mavericks before last playing in 2011-12.

The arrest continues a turbulent period for the former first-round draft pick out of Saint Joseph’s University. In 2020, he was spotted panhandling in Dallas before former Mavericks owner Mark Cuban picked him up and helped him enter a rehab facility in Florida the following year.
