On Monday, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband took the stand in the trial against David DePape, the man who brutally attacked him with a hammer in the couple’s San Francisco home last year.
Paul Pelosi recalled the attack, which happened on October 28, 2022, in the middle of the night.
“The door opened and a very large man came in with a hammer in one hand and some ties in the other and he said, ‘Where’s Nancy?’ as I think that woke me up,” Paul said. “I’m asleep and he bursts in the door and that woke me up.”
According to federal prosecutors, DePape smashed his shoulder going through a glass panel on the Pelosis’ back door.
“Where’s Nancy? Where’s Nancy?” he asked, standing over Paul while holding a hammer and zip ties.
Paul called 911, and two police officers arrived at the scene in time to witness DePape strike Paul in the head with the hammer.
The 83-year-old was left with a fractured skill and other injuries to his right arm and hand.
DePape has pleaded not guilty to attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official with intent to retaliate against the official for the performance of their duties.
If convicted, DePape will face life in prison.
