Nancy Grace, known more for her inflammatory coverage of crime than her journalistic integrity, has found herself once again on the receiving end of a lawsuit.
Ben Seibert, who she branded as a “selfie stalker” on her HLN program this year, is suing the on-air personality for defamation, according to Denver’s KUSA-TV. In the segment, prior to which she allegedly knew Seibert had been cleared by police, Grace called his selfie a “textbook serial killer’s calling card.” Seibert is suing her for $100,000 in damages.
Back in January, there was a home invasion in Denver in which the female victim told police that the culprit had taken a selfie with her phone. Crime Stoppers in Denver later released a picture from the woman’s home that featured Seibert. When Seibert was made aware that his picture was circulating, he went to police, who quickly cleared him of any involvement in the home invasion.
Police allegedly informed Grace that the “selfie stalker” was not the man pictured in the photo she was using. Despite police debunking the popular theory, Grace apparently went through with the show anyway.
In addition to suing Grace for the incident with Seibert, Seibert’s lawyers are planning to look into more of Grace’s reports to find more blatant defamation and lack of fact-checking.
“Based on the history we’ve researched regarding Ms. Grace, John Pineau, we’re pretty confident there are other victims,” he said.
Last month, Ethel Kennedy’s nephew Michael Skakel settled a lawsuit against Grace for damaging and unverified comments she made in 2012 about the murder case against him. Skakel was granted a new trial last fall for the 1975 murder of Martha Moxley and is currently out on bail.
