‘N Sync’s long-awaited reunion may or may not be happening at the MTV VMAs Sunday Aug. 25 in celebration of Justin Timberlake receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

Rumors of an ‘N Sync reunion began circulating early Tuesday morning after it was printed in the New York Post. The newspaper also claimed that Timberlake’s fellow bandmates, J.C. Chasez, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick were all in Miami over the weekend to support Timberlake’s tour with Jay Z, suggesting that the sight of all original five members of the boy band together signifies that a reunion is in the works.

Soon after the report, the Internet was buzzing with news of a possible reunion, but conflicting reports soon emerged. One suggested that MTV was still in the process of making the reunion a reality, saying that the producers were “trying to make it happen,” according to US Weekly.

MTV reportedly feels that including ‘N Sync as a part of Timberlake’s huge success is important in regards to the awarding of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award on Sunday.

“They wanted to make sure that ‘N Sync was acknowledged as a major part of Justin’s success. They were together for 10 years before he went solo,” a source told E! News.

A reunion would certainly rid Timberlake of the accusations that he has no respect for his 'N Sync days, something he made fun of when he hosted Saturday Night Live in May 2011.

Rumors of an ‘N Sync reunion have been tossed around ever since the band broke up in 2002, and the singers have always been quick to deny them.

“I don’t see that happening anytime soon. Justin’s very busy with his acting career right now so I think it’s going to be quite a while before we even think about doing anything,” Bass told E! News in 2010.

Chasez echoed Bass’ statements just last year, saying, “It’s just not in the cards. I’m sure that everybody in my group has been asked at one time or another – I know I get asked, I know the other guys get asked – but we’re happy with what it was and we’re happy to move on.”

Tuesday night, Bass appeared to dismiss the rumors of a VMA reunion on his radio show Dirty Pop with Lance Bass, but he left room for speculation as he never actually said that the reunion was not happening.

“Justin Timberlake is getting the Michael Jackson [Video] Vanguard Award this Sunday at the awards so of course people are automatically going to think we’re going to be there performing, but this is exactly how it happened and I knew these rumors were going to fly. We all came down here [to Miami] except for J.C…and [we] went to go see Justin’s last show with Jay Z at the [Sun Life] Stadium last Friday, and I even took a picture of it, it’s on my Instagram…I think that’s what started the rumor that there’s going to be this big reunion with NSYNC,” Bass explained.

Bass went on to express his appreciation for fans who took social media by storm after the news broke of a possible reunion. He noted that when ‘N Sync was going strong, social media didn’t exist and it’s been fun for him to see how ‘N Sync fans use the medium now. No other bandmate, including Timberlake, has released a comment and neither has MTV.
