Two days ago, actress Nia Vardalos filed for divorce from her husband Ian Gomez. On Thursday in Los Angeles, Gomez responded, citing irreconcilable differences for their split as Vardalos had.

The two starred in her hit film My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002), which was inspired by their romance. The independent movie went on to be one of the highest-grossing of its kind. Vardalos played Fotoula Portokalos who had a love interest in Ian Miller (John Corbett). Gomez played his best man, Mike. Gomez is best known for starring in TV series Cougar Town and The Drew Carrey Show.

Vardalos and Gomez wed in September 1993 and share an 11-year-old adopted daughter, Ilaria Vardalos Gomez. After struggling with infertility issues for years, they adopted her in 2008. They’re both asking for joint legal and physical custody of Ilaria.

Additionally, Gomez asked for spousal support “be determined in mediation.”

“We’ve been respectfully separated for a lengthy period of time. Our relationship became a friendship so the decision to end the marriage is completely mutual and amicable,” Vardalos and Gomez said in a joint statement. “It is our hope that decency will prevail on the reporting of this story which will soon be yesterday’s news. Thank you for respecting our privacy.”

The estranged couple hosted ABC reality show The Great American Baking Show from 2015 to 2017. According to reports, their separation date was listed as June 29, 2017.

Just one day after Vardalos filed for divorce, she and her daughter were spotted together vacationing in Greece.

Six days ago, Vardalos shared an Instagram post with the caption, “See you later, I’m going into my writing cave.” Perhaps another screenplay on the rise?
