Don’t be alarmed if you fall head over feet for the upcoming stage musical featuring Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill.
The musical, debuting at Cambridge’s American Repertory in May 2018, will use Morissette’s 1995 album as the basis of its production. The show will be directed by Diane Paulus, with orchestrations provided by Tom Kitt, and a book by Diablo Cody. Paulus and Kitt’s resumes include musicals such Waitress and Next to Normal respectively. Cody, who will be making his Broadway debut with this show, is known for his work as the Oscar-winning screenwriter of the film Juno and as a co-creator for the series United States of Tara.
The show, written by Cody with creative input by Morissette, will revolve around a modern and multigenerational family and will touch on issues of gender identity and race. The musical is said to feature several songs from Morissette’s repertoire including popular hits from Jagged Little Pill such as “Ironic” and “Hand in My Pocket”.
Morissette had this to say about the distinguished team working on the musical:
This team that has come together for this Jagged Little Pill musical is my musical theatre dream come true. The chemistry between all of us is crackling and I feel honored to be diving into these songs again, surrounded by all of this searing talent. Diablo and Diane are already taking these deeply personal songs that are part of my soul’s marrow to a whole other level of hope, freedom and complexity.
Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill was released 22 years ago and has sold more than 33 million copies worldwide. The groundbreaking album won five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year in 1995, making Morissette the youngest artist in history to receive the honor at the time.
Paulus spoke about the importance of this musical adaptation stating “Jagged Little Pill defined a generation and yet the raw, emotional honesty of Alanis’ songs feels more needed now than ever”.
Amen.
