The MTV Video Music Awards returns this year with performances from the biggest names in music and even a few artists who are making a return to the VMA stage.
The VMAs will be broadcasting live from New York City’s Madison Square Garden and will open with a performance by Britney Spears — who hasn’t hit the VMA stage since 2007.
“She’s not one to do the same thing she’s done in the past,” Jesse Ignjatovic, an executive producer for the show, told Entertainment Weekly regarding Spears’ return. “It’s going to be something you’ve not seen her do before. It’s going to separate her from other performances.”
Rihanna is also set to perform a medley of her greatest hits, after she accepts the notable Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.
The award show announced that hip hop artist Future will be taking the stage, and there is speculation that controversial rapper Kanye West may also take the stage. West is set to perform his polarizing single “Famous,” according to sources.
Beyonce is another artist that is rumored to perform at the award show — she also leads the VMA nominations with 11 nods.
Nick Jonas will be joined on stage with Ty Dolla $ign to perform their new single “Bacon.”
Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj will also be performing their latest single “Side to Side” from Grande’s hit album Dangerous Woman. The duo previously performed on the VMA stage back in 2014, putting on a breakout performance with Jessie J as they sang their previous hit “Bang Bang.”
Other stars who will be attending the award show as presenters includes: Diddy, Alicia Keys, Ansel Elgort, Bebe Rexha, Fifth Harmony, Jaden Smith, Kim Kardashian, Rita Ora, Shameik Moore and Tove Lo.
DJ Khaled will host the pre-show and serve as a commentator throughout the evening, but no official host for the show has been confirmed.
The 2016 MTV Video Music Awards airs on Aug. 26, at 9 p.m. ET.
