MTV VMAs 2014 Recap: Miley Cyrus, Ed Sheeran & Katy Perry Win Top Awards

The 2014 MTV VMAs were held Sunday, Aug. 24 at The Forum in Englewood, Calif., where Beyoncé took home the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award and Miley Cyrus earned the Moonman for Video of the Year.

Cyrus’s “Wrecking Ball” bested the anticipated winner “Drunk In Love” by Beyoncé and Jay Z, as well as Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy,” Sia’s “Chandelier” and Pharrel Williams’ “Happy.” Cyrus’s once-homeless friend Jesse accepted the award on her behalf and the behalf of America’s 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth.

Best Male Video went to Ed Sheeran (feat. Pharrell Williams) for “Sing.” The British singer-songwriter beat out Eminem, John Legend, Sam Smith and Pharrell Williams. Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse” came out on top of music videos from Iggy Azalea, Beyoncé, Ariana Grande and Lorde to win Best Female Video.

The video for "Problem" by Ariana Grande (featuring Iggy Azalea) won Best Pop Video, Lorde’s “Royals” won for Best Rock Video. The Best Hip-Hop Video Moonman went to “Hold On (We’re Going Home)” by Drake, though the rapper wasn’t there to collect his prize.

Beyoncé, though she struck out in the top music video categories, received her Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, which was presented by her husband Jay Z and daughter Blue Ivy. Beyoncé also performed a medley of her hits, which included "Mine," "Haunted," "Pretty Hurts," "No Angel," "Jealous," "Blow," "Drunk in Love," "Rocket," "Partition," "Superpower," "Flawless," "Yonce," "Blue," and "XO."

Other VMA performances featured Nick Minaj, Jessie J, Ariana Grande, Maroon 5, Iggy Azalea, Sam Smith, 5 Seconds of Summer and Taylor Swift, who took on her new single “Shake It Off.”
