MTV Video Music Awards Recap: Justin Timberlake, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Top Honorees

The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards put Justin Timberlake front and center with nearly 20-minutes onstage and the night’s most prestigious awards. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, who came into the night leading in nominations, went home with two moonmen, while Selena Gomez graciously accepted her first trophy at the awards show.

Timberlake took to the Barclays Center stage and delivered a memorable medley of his solo hits, including “Like I Love You,” “My Love,” “Cry Me a River,” and, of course, “Suit & Tie.” When his former NSYNC group members joined him on the stage, they gave their fans a minute of their synchronized choreography while singing a bit of “Bye, Bye, Bye.”

Following the performance, Timberlake received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. He later received the Video of the Year award for “Mirrors,” which he said was a tribute to his grandparents.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis won Best Hip Hop Video for “Can’t Hold Us.” After performing “Same Love” with Mary Lambert, they also received the social message video award for the song that advocates for LGBT rights.

Winning the first moonman of her career was Selena Gomez, who took home the award for Best Pop Video for “Come and Get It.” Her pal Taylor Swift, who sat beside her at the VMA’s, won Best Female Video for “I Knew You Were Trouble.” Swift’s ex Harry Styles and the rest of One Direction’s “Best Song Ever” single won the fan-voted Best Song of the Summer award.

Bruno Mars, who won Best Male Video for “Locked Out of Heaven,” performed his new single “Gorilla.” Miley Cyrus performed “We Can’t Stop” in a teddy bear-themed leotard, before stripping down to a gold lamé bikini to sing/twerk along to Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines.” In a more subtle performance, Kanye West delivered “Blood on the Leaves” entirely in silhouette.

Pop divas Lady Gaga and Katy Perry opened and closed the night, repectively. Gaga, changing her outfit and hairstyle numerous times while onstage, perfomed her new single "Applause." Outside, under the Brooklyn Bridge, Perry gave a rousing performance of her new anthem "Roar."
