It’s time to break out the golden popcorn again, as MTV’s annual Movie Awards are set to air on June 6. Except this time MTV’s decided to add a little spice to their bucket by creating three new categories — Global Superstar, Best Scared-as-Sh*t Performance and Biggest Badass Star.
The nominees for best movie (Alice in Wonderland, Avatar, Harry Potter, The Hangover, and Twilight New Moon) are predominant in all of the twelve categories and will most likely be predictors of which film will be earn the most trophies.
The Hangover, a surprise hit which only had an extremely low $35 million budget, made a whopping $277,322,502 in its total domestic gross. Besides Best Movie, MTV also nominated Zach Galifankis for Best Break Out Star, both Galifinakis and Bradley Cooper for Best Comedic Performance, Ken Jeong for Best Villain, and the "Naked Trunk Surprise" scene as Best WTF Moment.
New Moon also has a strong appearance on the ballot, with both Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner for Best Male Performance, Pattinson and Kristen Stewart for Best Kiss, and Lautner, Pattinson and Stewart for Global Superstar.
Oscar favorites Avatar, The Blind Side and Precious had some presence on the ballot, though the MTV crowd typically tends to prefer the blockbusters.
Comedian Aziz Ansari is set to host the event, with Jersey Shore sweetheart/fame-whore Snooki as a guest correspondent (whatever that means). The show will also feature a never-before-seen clip of the latest Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. –ELENA COX
