John Bailey, 75, the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, has been cleared of sexual misconduct after an internal investigation by the Academy.
Bailey is a cinematographer whose credits include Groundhog Day, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.
Bailey denied the allegation that while on a movie set a decade ago he touched a woman inappropriately. There were three complaints filed against him but the Academy said in their statement that “there was only one claim under consideration.”
The Academy said his response to the claim and corroborating statements were considered. The membership committee came to a unanimous decision to clear him. “The Committee unanimously determined that no further action was merited on this matter… John Bailey remains President of the Academy,” they said in a statement. The decision was also backed by the Academy’s Board of Governors.

The investigation happened after Harvey Weinstein’s membership was revoked after sexual assault allegations were mounting against him. Bailey was two months into his presidency at the time and said in a memo that the Academy “can be a part of a larger initiative to define standard of behavior and to support the vulnerable women and men who may be at personal and career risk because of violations of ethical standards by their peers.”
