Morgan Freeman arrived late for an appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival Friday night due to mechanical problems with his private plane.

Freeman, 77, managed to land his plane after noticing a problem with the slats. Despite making numerous attempts to correct the problem and test out the aircraft, the actor was unable to fly the plane from Mississippi to Toronto.

“The slats would not retract in the air,” Freeman told The Hollywood Reporter of his plane. “On the ground they were fine, but in the air they were a problem. We were about 10 minutes in the air trying to get them to retract but they didn’t so we went back and landed.”

“Once we got in the air, they still didn’t work again, so we landed,” he continued, referring to a series of failed attempts. “We cycled them again, and took off, they still didn’t work, so we landed. Cycled them again, and took off, they still didn’t work so we went back. Had to put the plane away and take out the other plane.”

While the process of testing out the plane and getting the other one ready for the flight took a considerable amount of time, Freeman was quick to note that his life wasn’t in danger.

“I just didn’t know how late I was,” he explained. “I was never in any danger.”

Freeman was heading up to the Toronto International Film Festival for the premiere of Ruth & Alex in which he stars opposite Diane Keaton as one half of a married couple forced out of their Brooklyn townhome by gentrification and the invasion of hipsters. While Freeman was an hour and a half late to the film’s pre-reception party, he made it in time for the film’s screening and red carpet – where he planted a kiss on his costar.
