More Than 250 Selfie-Related Deaths Reported Since 2011

More than 250 people worldwide have died from a selfie-related death between October 2011 and November 2017, according to a new report.

The shocking number of deaths can be attributed to young people taking photos of themselves in scenic vistas for social media clout.

Of the 250 deaths, the leading cause tends to be be drowning, followed by incidents involving transportation, and falling from heights. Other causes of selfie-related deaths include animals, firearms and electrocution.

One notable selfie-related death was the death of Gigi Wu. Wu was an experienced hiker from Taiwan, who took selfies of herself atop mountain tops in a bikini. Her photos amassed a huge following and received thousands of likes.

It was during a solo hike in Yushan National Park that the 36-year-old Wu fell into a remote ravine.

Wu tried contacting for help, but she couldn’t move her lower body and remained fixed to the site. By the time the rescue team arrived, Wu had been long dead.
