Brazilian Instagram model Mariana Michelini needs reconstructive surgery to repair her unrecognizable face after a dentist performed a botched “facial harmonization” procedure in 2020.

“My life has stopped, I’m psychologically broken. I just want my face back,” Michelini told media outlets. “I’m suffering a lot, but I have faith that justice will be served, I don’t want other people to go through this.”

Facial harmonization aims to enhance your facial appearance in a minimally invasive way. It reportedly combines non-surgical procedures and injectable treatments such as botox and hyaluronic acid fillers.

Michelini opted to have the procedure done for free in exchange for her advertising the dentist on her Instagram page with 15,000 followers.

A dermatologist reportedly found that Michelini’s face had actually been injected with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). PMMA is an engineered thermoplastic, commonly known by its trade name Plexiglas.

One study on PMMA facial injections found that, “although considered safe for the most part by advocates, they have been associated with many adverse reactions such as ecchymosis, haematomas, swelling, itching, erythema, hypertrophic scarring, hypersensitivity, palpable nodules, tissue necrosis, blindness and foreign body granuloma.”

Michelini is suing the person who performed her injections. The doctor is also reportedly suing Michelini for defamation and has filed a lawsuit to prevent disclosing their name and business in association with the botched procedure.

Michelini’s Instagram bio mentions her desire to achieve justice as well as wanting her “face back.”
