Mobb Deep rapper Prodigy, born Albert Johnson, died June 20, and his cause of death was just revealed to be accidental choking.
The 42-year-old rapper had struggled with sickle cell anemia since birth and had been hospitalized for complications with the disease prior to his death. The Clark County coroner’s office has confirmed that Prodigy’s death was caused by accidental choking. Further, reports suggest that the related food item was an egg.
The rapper was pulled out of a fan meet-and-greet in Las Vegas because the intense heat was making symptoms of sickle cell anemia more apparent and dangerous. He choked and died while inside the hospital.
Prodigy became famous for his rapping skills in the 1990s when he teamed up with fellow Queens rapper Havoc. The pair became known as the duo Mobb Deep and recorded several hit albums and songs. Their eighth and final album, The Infamous Mobb Deep, was released in 2014.
Prodigy was laid to rest in New York on June 29 in a private service, with attendees such as 50 Cent, LL Cool J, and Ice T.
