Mo Collins, who was a lineman in the NFL and most recently worked as a high school football coach, died on Sunday. He was 38.
Collins died of kidney failure over the weekend after being on dialysis, according to the Charlotte Observer.
Prior to his death, Collins had been serving as the coach for the West Charlotte High School football team. This season was his second with the squad. With him at the helm, the school had earned its most wins since the 2010 season.
"He's a guy that tried to include everybody," said Charlotte Christian assistant coach Eugene Robinson. "Mo's a motivator and a guy that gets things done. He's one of those guys that says, 'There's a need,' and he gets things done. He's real passionate and impresses upon you his passion. … He's one of those guys when you talk to (him), he's so lovable because he's such a big guy. The first thing you think of is a big teddy bear.”
Collins was drafted No. 23 overall in the 1998 draft by the Oakland Raiders. He went on to play a total of six seasons, competing in the 2002 Super Bowl and starting 64 of 71 regular season games.
"We are in the NFL former players chapter together," said former Carolina Panther and Victory Christian football coach Dee Brown. “I know he had a big heart to help kids and really wanted to turn West Charlotte High School around. I know he was taking great pride in that. Charlotte, West Charlotte High School, the NFL and the entire community has just lost a good man, but I'm sure his legacy will remain in the hearts and lives he touched."
Seibert speculated, “If struggle without context is baffling, heaven without struggle isn’t very interesting.”
The shooter was identified to be John R. Lyons, 24, of Westchester, Illinois.
