Mitt Romney Says He Rejected Oprah Winfrey’s Idea To Run For Presidency Together In A ‘Unity Ticket’
Oprah Winfrey reportedly pitched the idea of running with Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) for president before the 2020 election.
In Romney’s upcoming biography, Romney: A Reckoning by McKay Coppins, he recalls how Winfrey approached him with her idea of a unity ticket, telling him that they could “save the country” together.
It’s unclear who would have been the presidential candidate and who would have taken the number two slot.
Romney declined Winfrey’s offer because he thought their campaign would help Donald Trump win another term in office rather than hinder him.
Winfrey was “never serious” about her offer to Romney, although her close friends do believe she should run for president.
In 2018, Winfrey declared that she would not run for president during a 60 Minutes interview.
“I had a lot of wealthy men calling, telling me that they would run my campaign and raise $1 billion for me,” she stated. “I am actually humbled by the fact that people think that I could be a leader of the free world, but it’s just not in my spirit. . . it’s not in my DNA.”
Coppins’ new book is coming out on October 24 and will contain dozens of interviews he conducted with Romney.
Romney allowed him access to his journals and diaries so that the author could create a complete biography of the senator.
Romney recently announced that he will be retiring and does not plan on running for reelection to the Senate next year.
He has been serving as a senator for Utah since 2019.
Previously, Romney was the Massachusetts governor from 2003 to 2007 and ran for president in 2012 as the GOP nominee.
Romney has publicly spoken out against Trump in the past.
He recently asked GOP donors to back a single Republican competitor against Trump and have the other candidates drop out of the race so that Trump would not win by default.
