Tom Cruise broke his ankle in a stunt on set of Mission: Impossible 6, halting production on the film.
Cruise is known for performing his own dare-devil stunts, and was injured during a leap between two buildings. Despite being attached to cables, the star slammed into one of the concrete walls and broke his ankle. Director Christopher McQuarrie has assured fans that the mishap will not delay the release date of the film, which is still set for July 27, 2018. “Thank you all for your support and concern. Tom is on the mend and MI6 is on track for 07.27.2018,” the director tweeted.
McQuarrie also posted a link to an Empire article in which he states that Cruise is “in very good spirits.” He is also warding off rumors that Cruise had fallen short of his jump target, insisting that part of the stunt was the actor slamming into the wall.
“What happened is a matter of coordinating what Tom is doing with what the camera is doing, which means you have to do it a number of times,” the director explained. “And on the fourth try, he hit the building at a slightly different angle and he broke his ankle. He knew the instant that he hit the building that his ankle was broken. You can see it on his face.”
M:I6, co-starring Simon Pegg, Henry Cavill, Rebecca Ferguson, Angela Bassett, and Alec Baldwin, is scheduled to film for two more months. McQuarrie shared that he did not know how long the hiatus would last, but assured that he would “move heaven and earth” to make sure the film met its release date.
