On Thursday, Vandergrift’s radio station, WiLD 94.9, announced his passing on Twitter and asked listeners to keep his family and friends in their thoughts and prayers.
Vandergrift was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2021. A couple of hours before he was last seen, he spoke about his poor health. “The body and the pain and all that stuff, I can handle. What it’s doing to my brain I could never describe to you,” Vandergrift said, adding that his doctors said his options were an experimental kind of treatment or surgery.
The radio host was last seen at his San Francisco home on February 23. In a statement posted to the police department’s Facebook page, Vandergrift was considered “at-risk.”
Natasha Yi, Vandergrift’s wife and radio co-host, thanked “the entire iHeartRadio family.” She also stated that her husband had been going through “physical torture” for the past two years.
Vandergrift’s radio co-workers remembered him by sharing their “favorite” memories and stories of him on Instagram.
