Authorities have found the body of a paddleboarder who went missing in a pond in Martha’s Vineyard near former President Barack Obama‘s home.
Police said on Monday that the search for an unidentified 43-year-old black man had concluded after he went underwater in the Edgartown Great Pond.
Emergency service members received a call at around 7:40 p.m. on Sunday. Several first responder groups, as well as the U.S. Coast Guard, searched the pond.
Another paddleboarder who witnessed the incident told authorities that he saw the man struggle to stay afloat and then submerged. He did not resurface. The man’s paddleboard and hat were found later that night.
The victim’s remains were detected by the Massachusetts Environmental Police using sonar devices, and the body was recovered from the pond at around 10 a.m. the following morning.
Massachusetts State Police (MSP) said that the body was found “approximately 100 feet from shore at a depth of about eight feet.”
