Police in Branson, Missouri announced that former MMA fighter David Koenig’s remains were found on December 22 by a man searching for deer antlers, and the resulting investigation concluded that the skeletal remains were his.
Koenig was last seen by family and friends at the Peach Tree Inn in Branson, and apparently sent some of them disturbing messages asking for help after he disappeared.
He was reported missing in 2020, and the discovery comes at a time when investigations had stalled after authorities searched for “thousands of hours” directly following the disappearance.
Investigators say that it appeared that no “foul play” was involved in Koenig’s death, and his mother Tracy wrote a social media post supporting that claim.
“Why he was in distress, and why he walked through the deep woods… we most likely will never know. But he is gone,” she wrote passionately.
Branson Police Chief Jeff Matthews said that this was “not the ending we had hoped for,” when questioned about the case, and offered condolences to Koenig’s family and friends.
