After months of speculation and concern, Rep. Kay Granger, a Republican who has represented Texas’s 12th Congressional District since 1997, has been found residing in a dementia care facility.

Granger, 81, disappeared from public view in July after casting a vote against an amendment to reduce the salary of the Deputy Assistant Administrator for Pesticide Programs to $1. Her sudden absence led to unanswered questions from her constituents and colleagues alike.

The mystery was solved when Carlos Turcios, a reporter for the Dallas Express, investigated her whereabouts. Attempts to reach Granger through her office were met with voicemail messages, and her constituency office showed no signs of activity. A tip from a local resident ultimately led Turcios to an assisted living facility specializing in memory care, where staff confirmed Granger had been living for some time.

“This is her home,” Taylor Manziel, the facility’s assistant executive director, told the Dallas Express. However, the facility did not allow Turcios to speak with Granger regarding her views on the House spending bill or her ability to continue fulfilling her congressional duties.

Granger was reportedly found wandering lost and confused in her former Fort Worth neighborhood before being moved to the care facility. It remains unclear why her condition was not disclosed to the public by her relatives or staff, sparking criticism from some Republican leaders.

State Republican Executive Committeeman Rolando Garcia expressed dismay over the handling of the situation, calling it a “sad and humiliating way to end her political career.”

“The fact that Kay Granger is unable to leave her nursing home to participate in the most important congressional vote of the year suggests she was already in visible decline when she ran for re-election in 2022,” Garcia said in a statement.

Granger had previously announced her retirement, set for the end of the current congressional term. Starting in January, her seat will be filled by Craig Goldman, a Republican and former member of the Texas House of Representatives.
