Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D), who served as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate in the recent election, shared his thoughts on the Democratic Party’s loss in the presidential race, noting that he was “a little surprised” by the result.
“It felt like at the rallies, at the things I was going to, the shops I was going in, that the momentum was going our way,” Walz said in an interview with KSTP-TV on Thursday. “And it obviously wasn’t at the end of time.”
Acknowledging his surprise at the outcome, Walz stated, “I thought we had a positive message, and I thought the country was ready for that.”
Despite the setback, he expressed gratitude for his time on the campaign trail, calling it “a privilege to serve” alongside Harris and recounting memorable moments, such as their introduction as running mates at Temple University in Philadelphia.
Democrats are now reflecting on their widespread losses with speculation about contributing factors, including economic messaging, debates over foreign policy and cultural issues like transgender rights.
Walz, however, remains optimistic about his continued work in Minnesota, where legislative dynamics have shifted to a split 67-67 in the state House of Representatives.
“Coming back here now and having the privilege to be able to continue to do this work feels really good, and I’m actually really looking forward to this legislative session with some different dynamics around it,” he said, while also noting he would “miss the excitement” of the campaign trail.
Walz became known as the “joyful” attack dog for the Democrats on the campaign trial.
