Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz Says Democrats Lost In 2024 Election Because They ‘Played It Too Safe’

Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minnesota) declared that Democrats should have taken more risks in the 2024 presidential election. “We shouldn’t have been playing this thing so safe,” Walz said during an interview with Politico.

He also told the outlet that he and Harris, who lost to Donald Trump in last year’s election, were impeded by the brief length of their 107-day campaign.

“These are things you might have been able to get your sea legs, if you will, 18 months out, where the stakes were a lot lower,” the Minnesota governor asserted. “[But] after you lose, you have to go back and assess where everything was at, and I think that is one area, that is one area we should think about.”

“I think we probably should have just rolled the dice and done the town halls, where [voters] may say, ‘You’re full of s—, I don’t believe in you,'” he went on to say. “I think there could have been more of that.”

Walz said that Democrats, “as a party, are more cautious” in engaging with both mainstream and non-traditional media.

“In football parlance, we were in a prevent defense to not lose when we never had anything to lose because I don’t think we were ever ahead,” the former football coach noted, referencing a strategy in which a team is focused on a gritty defense instead of attacking.

During an interview with KSTP-TV on December 5, 2024, Walz admitted that he was “a little surprised” that the Democrats lost in the 2024 presidential raced.

However, he still conveyed his gratitude for his time on the campaign trail, saying that it was “a privilege to serve” alongside Harris. Walz recalled memorable moments, including their introduction as running mates at Temple University in Philadelphia.
