Ryan Reynolds has stirred up controversy after saying that he and his wife Blake Lively come from “very working class” backgrounds.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds reflected on how he and Lively tried to provide their kids with as much of a childhood as they could, despite the pressures of their high-status careers.
“We try to give them as normal a life as possible. I try not to impose upon them the difference in their childhood to my childhood to my wife’s childhood,” he said. “We both grew up very working class, and I remember when they were very young, I used to say or think, like, ‘Oh god, I would never have had a gift like this when I was a kid,’ or ‘I never would’ve had this luxury of getting takeout,’ or whatever.”
Reynolds grew up the youngest of three, his father was a policeman and his mother a retail worker. While Reynolds’ own upbringing has not sparked much debate over whether or not he grew up working class, his inclusion of his wife in the statement has ignited a firestorm of disgusted comments from internet users who have pointed out Lively’s many connections to the entertainment industry growing up.
Lively’s late father Ernie Lively, an actor and director, as well as her mother Elaine Lively, an actress and talent manager, both had undisputable connections within the entertainment industry, and Lively has previously spoken about her experience growing up on set. She made her on-screen debut at ten years old in The Sandman, a film directed by her father.
Lively’s older brother also helped her get started in the industry, as he had a talent agency that landed her several auditions, most notably the one for her teenage blockbuster The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants. In a 2006 interview with Radio Free Entertainment, Lively stated that she “didn’t have much of a choice” about having an entertainment career.
Reynolds and Lively first met in 2010 on the set of Green Lantern and started dating the next year. They were married in 2012 and share four children together: James, 9, Inez, 8, Betty, 5, and Olin, born in 2023.
