One of the many California residents who lost their home in the L.A. fires this last week, Mandy Moore encouraged her followers to donate to a GoFundMe page for her in-laws, who also lost their home, and slammed the haters for their criticism.
Moore shared the link on a post to Instagram, writing in the caption, “Yesterday, my brother-in-law and sister-in-law Griff & Kit lost their home and everything they own in the Eaton Fire.”
She continued, “With their first baby on the way in a matter of weeks, they need our support now more than ever. Griff is a touring musician and also lost his entire arsenal of drums/percussion he uses to make a living. It’s all so much. So many have asked how to help during this unimaginable and stressful time…please consider donating and sharing to help them rebuild.”
Initially aiming to raise $60,000, the campaign has raised over $176,000 and counting.
In addition to a slew of donations, Moore’s campaign was also immediately met with a flood of criticism and questions about why the successful movie star – with an alleged net worth of $14 million – wasn’t donating her own money to her family.
In response to the backlash, Moore added an asterisk to her caption on the Instagram post, writing,“People questioning whether we’re helping out our own family or attributing some arbitrary amount of money Google says someone has is not helpful or empathetic.”
She continued, “Of course we are. Our buddy Matt started this GoFundMe, and I’m sharing because people have asked how they can help them. We just lost most of our life in a fire, too. Kindle F— OFF. No one is forcing you to do anything.”
Moore shared a photo of the burned remains of her home on her Instagram story, saying, “We were able to park and walk up our street to bear witness to all the loss. Miraculously, the main part of our house is still standing. For now. It’s not livable but mostly intact.”
She added, “We love this community and will do everything we can to help rebuild and support. Thanks to everyone checking on us and offering help. Altadena strong.”
Moore is one of many high-profile celebrities who have lost their homes in the fires this last week including, Paris Hilton, Billy Crystal and Miles Teller.
Fires have sparked across Los Angeles, spreading over 30,000 square miles, and presently 0% contained.
