Millie Bobby Brown Calls Out ‘Disturbing’ Bullying Over ‘Old’ Appearance: ‘I Refuse To Apologize For Growing Up’

Actress Millie Bobby Brown accused online trolls of the “disturbing” discourse about her physical appearance and criticisms for looking “old.”

“I want to take a moment to address something that I think is bigger than just me,” Brown shared in an Instagram video this week. “Something that affects every young woman who grows up under public scrutiny. I started in this industry when I was 10 years old. I grew up in front of the world, and people can’t seem to grow with me for some reason.”

Brown, 21, claimed critics expect her to retain the appearance of her original child-like figure during the first season of the hit science-fiction Netflix series Stranger Things; Brown also called out several headlines and reporters for mocking her appearance.

“And because I don’t, I’m not a target. The fact that adult writers are spending their time dissecting my face, my body, and my choices is disturbing,” she continued.

She also emphasized that it’s worse that grown women write some of the articles. “Disillusioned people can’t handle seeing a girl become a woman on her terms, not theirs, I refuse to apologize for growing up. I refuse to make myself smaller to fit the unrealistic expectations of people who can’t handle seeing a girl become a woman.”

“We have become a society where it’s so much easier to criticize than to pay a compliment,” Brown argued. “Not just for me, but for every young girl who deserves to grow up without fear of being torn apart for simply existing.”

Brown also called out the commentary on her appearance after attending the premiere of her new movie, Electric State, with her husband, Jake Bongiovi.

“@britishvogue, thank you,” she captioned a screenshot of a British Vogue article with the headline: “No One Cares How Old You Think Millie Bobby Brown Looks.”
